What 2G and 3G mean on a modem module
2G (GSM/GPRS) is the original digital mobile standard. It carries voice, SMS and slow data. Every GSM modem module supports it, and SMS is a native 2G service.
3G (UMTS/WCDMA) added faster data and, for a modem pool, an alternative way to register and send SMS in places where 2G was congested or absent. A "2G/3G" module can use either, choosing whichever the network offers.
4G (LTE) is data-first; SMS on 4G is carried over the IMS or falls back to 2G/3G. 4G modem pools cost more and are only necessary where 2G and 3G are both gone.
The UK position in 2026
| Operator | 3G | 2G | Notes for modem pools |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE (and BT, Plusnet, 1pMobile, Lyca on EE) | Switched off | Running; switch-off from May 2029 | Works on 2G |
| Vodafone (and VOXI, Lebara, Talkmobile) | Switched off | Running; switch-off during 2030 | Works on 2G |
| O2 / Virgin Media O2 (and giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile) | Switched off | Running; switch-off from summer 2029 | Works on 2G |
| Three (and iD Mobile, SMARTY) | Switched off | No 2G network | Will not register |
Ofcom confirms that 3G is now switched off across all UK networks, and the operators have agreed with government to complete 2G switch-off by 2033 at the latest. In practice a 2G/3G modem pool used in the UK is a 2G pool, and it will keep working on EE, Vodafone and O2 SIMs until those networks retire 2G at the end of the decade. Dates can move, so check your operator's current statement before a large deployment.
What this means for buying
- Choose SIMs from EE, Vodafone or O2 (or their MVNOs). Three-based SIMs will not work.
- SMS is unaffected by the loss of 3G. Messaging never needed 3G speeds; the modules simply use 2G.
- Plan for the 2029 to 2033 window. A pool bought today has several years of UK service. Organisations with longer horizons may budget for a 4G unit later.
- Outside the UK, check locally. Many countries still run 3G and some have switched off 2G instead. A 2G/3G unit covers both cases; confirm with the operator in the country of use.
Compatibility notice: 2G and 3G availability is set by mobile operators and changes by country, region and date. We describe our stocked unit as a 2G/3G model because that is what the modules support; we do not promise that any particular network will carry 2G or 3G at your location. Please confirm with your SIM provider.
Switch-off dates on this page were last checked against Ofcom's published guidance on 28 September 2026.
A note on "4G" listings
Some marketplace listings describe the same class of hardware as "4G" or "LTE" when the modules inside are 2G or 2G/3G. We think that is misleading, so we do not do it: the specification on our product page lists only what we have verified, and we will confirm the frequency bands of the modules fitted before dispatch if you ask.
