Two things people mean by "SMS gateway"
The phrase covers two very different products, and it helps to be clear which one you are after.
- Cloud or API SMS gateways are services. You send an HTTP request, the provider delivers the message through its own operator connections, and you pay per message. No hardware, no SIMs.
- Hardware SMS gateways are devices on your premises. Inside is one or more GSM modems, each holding a SIM. Your software talks to the modems (usually with AT commands over USB or serial, sometimes through a built-in HTTP interface) and the messages leave through the mobile network exactly as they would from a phone.
A GSM modem pool is a hardware SMS gateway with many modems. Our modem pool vs SMS gateway guide untangles the terminology further; the short version is that the hardware on this site fits the second definition.
Modem pool or all-in-one SMS gateway appliance?
Within hardware gateways there are two designs. All-in-one appliances (SMSEagle and similar) put one to a handful of modems in a box with a built-in web interface, API and message store; you plug in Ethernet, log in, and send. They are quick to deploy and cost from several hundred pounds for one or two SIM channels. Modem pools put 8 to 64 modems in a chassis and leave the software to you; they cost far less per channel and scale much further, but you run an SMS server (Gammu-SMSD, Kannel, playSMS or a commercial product) on a host PC. Choose an appliance for one or two channels and no IT involvement; choose a pool once you need more than a few SIMs, want your own software stack, or need throughput measured in thousands of messages an hour. Our 64-port pool costs £7.01 per channel; the appliances are typically £200 to £500 per channel.
Why businesses choose GSM SMS gateway hardware
Your own numbers. Messages show a real mobile number from your own SIM. Customers can reply to it, save it and call it, and it is not shared with anyone else's campaigns.
Cost at volume. With a hardware gateway the per-message cost is whatever your SIM tariff charges, often nothing on an inclusive-text business plan. A worked example: 20,000 messages a month through a UK SMS API at 3p each is £600 a month, £7,200 a year. The same volume through a 64-port pool at £449 with, say, sixteen business SIMs at £8 a month each with inclusive texts is £128 a month, so the hardware pays for itself inside the first four months and costs under £1,600 a year thereafter. Below a couple of thousand messages a month the API is usually simpler and cheaper.
Inbound as well as outbound. Each channel receives as well as sends, so two-way conversations, keyword responses and delivery-report handling happen on your equipment.
Independence. No third-party platform to be suspended, repriced or re-routed. For industrial and machine-to-machine messaging, where alerts must get through regardless of an internet outage, that matters.
Industrial and bulk SMS gateway use
"Industrial SMS gateway" usually means a unit built to run continuously in a plant room, control room or comms cabinet: metal chassis, mains power, individually replaceable modem modules, wide operating temperature. The 64-port pool we stock is that kind of device: a steel chassis with side ventilation, a 100-240 V mains supply, per-channel power switches and modules that lift out without shutting the unit down, rated for -20 °C to +55 °C. It is used for plant alarms, telemetry collection, fleet and freight tracking, and service notifications at scale.
"Bulk SMS modem" is the same hardware described from the sender's point of view: many channels working in parallel so that a large batch of legitimate messages, such as appointment reminders or service alerts to your own customers, goes out in minutes rather than hours. We supply it for that kind of lawful, consented messaging and not for unsolicited marketing; see lawful use.
USB SMS gateway: how the host connection works
The gateways we sell connect over USB 2.0. Each modem appears to the operating system as a virtual serial port, so a 64-channel unit shows up as 64 COM ports on Windows or 64 tty devices on Linux. Your SMS server opens the ports it wants to use and drives each modem with AT commands. On the 64-port unit the chassis is split into two 32-channel banks, each with a USB-B host port, and there are USB-A ports for chaining a second chassis through the first. Step-by-step instructions, including the first AT commands to test each channel, are in how to connect a USB GSM modem pool.
SMS gateway hardware in the UK
Two UK-specific points, covered in full in our UK guide: UK 3G is switched off, so gateways here run on 2G with EE, Vodafone or O2 SIMs (not Three); and from 29 October 2026 a device able to use five or more SIMs is a SIM farm under the Crime and Policing Act 2026, so we verify buyers before supply (see lawful use).
Gateway sizes
The range runs from 8 to 64 SIM channels. The 64-port unit is held in UK stock and costs far less per channel than the made-to-order 8, 16 and 32-port 2G units, so it is the sensible choice even for buyers who planned on 16 or 32 channels; it can be run part-populated. See the size comparison and the 64-port SMS gateway explainer.
